Why did the poker chip go to school?

I sat down to hear Brenda’s proposal. She started with a quote from her dad. “If you are going to do something, do it right, or don’t do it at all.” I wholeheartedly agreed; it sounded like something I had heard from my grandfather. She proposed that we go to Las Vegas, to a casino school. Since we didn’t need to learn all the games a Las Vegas tournament dealer would, she had planned to go for a week to learn the official tournament rules for Texas Holdem.

We didn't go to Tournament Director school, but the dealers must know the rules. I thought this would help us. Plus, being able to say that I went to dealer school in Vegas sounds incredible on a resume in Knoxville, TN for a freeroll tournament director. 

I found my time at dealer school valuable; I learned I had been doing some things incorrectly. The reason was that I was uneducated about some of the rules and details of the rules. For example, it's unfair to players to redraw a button on one table when they get three new players. All tables should be treated equally in a tournament to prevent certain players from being put at an advantage or disadvantage. I learned how to do chip races correctly by using the suit rankings. Some other helpful tips that I learned were how to mark side pots. Like the poker chip, going to school was to help me “get a higher education and value.”

Never be afraid to invest in yourself. You never know how it may impact you and your future.
